Derek Besgrove Death, Accident, Cause of Death, Oregon, OH – The community of Oregon, Ohio and the broader Northwest Ohio region is reeling from the sudden and tragic loss of Derek Besgrove, a beloved husband, father of three, former NAIA rushing record-holder, coach, and respected safety advisor, who died in a fatal accident on Saturday, April 5, 2025. Derek was just 42 years old.

A proud graduate of Walsh University, Derek’s life was defined by leadership, humility, and service. From breaking collegiate football records to mentoring the next generation of athletes, Derek built a legacy rooted in hard work, heart, and connection. Known affectionately as “Coach B,” his presence was larger than life—yet always grounded in humility and an unwavering dedication to others.

During his football career at Walsh University (2000–2003), Derek made history, becoming the NAIA all-time leader in career rushing yards, with an astounding 5,738 yards. His achievements on the field, however, were only part of the story. Derek carried his love for the game into coaching, where he continued to inspire young athletes—not just in competition, but in life.

Professionally, Derek held the position of Senior Process Safety Advisor at Cenovus Toledo Refinery, where he was also a USW Process Safety Management Representative. Previously, he served in similar roles at bp America, always advocating for workplace safety and team welfare. His colleagues described him as diligent, respected, and compassionate—a natural leader who led with integrity.

Born and raised in Oregon, Ohio, and a graduate of Clay High School, Derek remained deeply connected to his roots. He never lost sight of the values instilled in him by his hometown and often gave back by coaching at local schools, mentoring athletes, and participating in community initiatives. Derek often said he was “living the dream”—a sentiment that captured his gratitude for a life filled with family, football, and purpose.

He is survived by his loving wife, Erin Besgrove, and their three children, who were the center of his universe. Friends and family describe Derek as an incredible father who was “always present,” offering guidance, laughter, and unconditional love. His wife, Erin, was his partner in every sense—celebrating life’s highs and navigating its challenges with unity, strength, and deep affection.

Heartfelt tributes from friends, family, colleagues, and athletes continue to pour in across social media. One parent shared how Derek had recently sent a meaningful text to her son, encouraging him just days before his death—a simple yet powerful reminder of how intentionally he lived and led.

“He never met someone who wasn’t a friend,” said longtime friend Erin Lachey. “He was proud—of his roots, his family, his players, and his purpose.”

Derek’s life and legacy are etched into the hearts of those who knew him. Whether through coaching, mentoring, friendship, or casual conversations at the polls, he left people better than he found them.

The Besgrove family is currently finalizing funeral arrangements, which will be shared in the coming days. Community members are invited to pay tribute and celebrate his life, which was lived fully and meaningfully. The family also welcomes memorial contributions in Derek’s name to local youth sports programs or organizations supporting athletic mentorship—causes he held close to his heart.

In a joint statement, the family said:

“Derek was a beacon of positivity and love. He lived to serve others, to lift people up, and to make life better for his family and his community. We are devastated but overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of love. We ask for privacy as we grieve and honor the life of the man we were so lucky to love.”

Derek’s mantra, #LiveLifeToTheMax, now takes on deeper meaning. May we all carry it forward in his honor.
