Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo State University community is reeling from the devastating news of the sudden passing of Kai Messmer, a 19-year-old freshman and standout student-athlete who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Saturday, April 5, 2025. Kai was a beloved member of the university’s Men’s Track & Field team, competing in both triple jump and long jump, and a dedicated business major. His unexpected death has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, coaches, and teammates.

A proud graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, New York, Kai had quickly made a name for himself as a gifted and passionate athlete. Standing 5’8″ and weighing 145 lbs, he competed fiercely in events like the triple jump (TJ) and long jump (LJ) while also recording competitive marks in the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles. His performance in the 2023–2024 SUNYAC Championships earned him All-SUNYAC Third Team honors for his third-place finish in the Long Jump, both during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also placed 6th in the Triple Jump (indoor) and 7th (outdoor) — proving himself to be a rising star within collegiate athletics.

Beyond the stats and accolades, Kai was known for his humility, leadership, and deep passion for growth. In his own words, he described himself as a “versatile athlete and leader who strives to improve not only my athleticism, but also my belief in team-building.” Those who knew him say this wasn’t just something he said — it was how he lived. He led by example, encouraged his teammates, and brought energy and positivity into every room, weight room, and track.

Kai’s journey in track began early — running modified track in middle school at the age of twelve. It was there that his love for the sport blossomed. As he progressed through junior varsity to varsity at St. Joe’s, his dedication deepened, and his vision grew clearer: to become the best student-athlete and leader possible. Buffalo State University became that next step for Kai — a place where he had already begun building meaningful relationships, growing academically, and excelling athletically.

The news of Kai’s tragic passing has shaken both his hometown of Buffalo, NY and the entire Buff State campus. Known for his fierce passion on the track and kind spirit off of it, he had been a part of the Kings of Grudge (KOG) racing community since he was a child, earning his nickname “Mr. 660” for his dominance on the 660-foot drag strip.
